Donation to Wishaw General maternity unit

Staff thank walkers for efforts

East Kilbride Lodge members donate to Wishaw General's maternity unit

Generous donation to ward 24

An East Kilbride mum-to-be took part in a 10 mile walk to say thanks to staff at Wishaw General Hospital’s maternity ward.

Gillian Greenshields, who was eight months pregnant, donned her walking boots to complete the sponsored hike from Strathyre to Callander along with members of the St Andrew no524 Masonic Lodge based in East Kilbride, in August.

Last week the Greenhills woman and two members from the group presented Wishaw General ward 24 sister Moira McMurdie with a cheque for £3782, all collected from their fundraising efforts.

Members of the Lodge, which meets in the Village in East Kilbride, decided to raise the money for the unit’s endowment fund as a way of saying thanks to staff for the help and support they gave Gillian on the four occasions she has been in the maternity unit.

Gillian first attended the unit seven years ago, when sadly her twins were stillborn.

However, three subsequent stays have been much happier affairs giving birth to Taylor 6, Charlie 3 and recent addition three month old Sam.

Gillian said: "As you can imagine, the first time I was there was very traumatic for me, and the staff were absolutely fantastic and so supportive.

"On the other three occasions they have been equally fantastic and I just wanted to pay their kindness back in some way.

"I was delighted when the lodge members offered to organise the walk, as well as a fundraising dance, for the benefit of the unit."

Kenny Walker, the East Kilbride lodge’s fundraiser, said: "We raise money for various charities and we were all familiar with Gillian’s story.

"As such, we thought the maternity unit would be a worthy beneficiary of our fundraising efforts as a way of thanking staff for all the help and support they gave her when she was in.

"We would also like to thank Donald Munro, Barrhead Travel and Grants Distillers for their support with the fundraising."

Ward 24 sister Moira McMurdie said: "This is a very generous donation by the lodge members and I want to say a big thanks to them all.

"Donations like these are always well received and they are put to our endowment fund which is used to purchase little extras for the benefit of patients and their relatives."
