Smoking and Pregnancy 


Stopping smoking at any time during pregnancy has significant health benefits for mother and baby.

The benefits for baby include:

  • Reduced risk of cot death
  • Better growth
  • Less risk of chest complaints like asthma
  • Fewer ear infections
  • Improved brain development

Mothers will benefit from a healthier pregnancy, healthier heart and lungs and more money for the new baby.

If you are pregnant and need help to stop smoking, ask your midwife, general practitioner (GP), health visitor, practice nurse or contact the stop smoking service.
