The Role of the Acute Liaison Nurse Practitioner 

 

The Acute Liaison Nurse Practitioner is part of the Adult Learning Disability Service in Lanarkshire.

Based within Kirklands Hospital, Bothwell, the acute liaison nurse practitioner covers the three acute hospitals in Lanarkshire:

  • Hairmyres in East Kilbride
  • Monklands in Airdrie
  • Wishaw General in Wishaw

The following service can be provided for people who are over 16 and have a learning disability, prior to admission, on admission or be part of the discharge planning: –

Supportive and Advisory to family, carers and hospital staff on the following:

  • Risk management
  • Communication issues
  • Signs of pain/distress
  • Consent Issues (Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000)
  • Epilepsy management
  • Mental Health Issues
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Importance of significant others
  • Ensuring Advocacy

In addition the Acute Liaison Nurse Practitioner assists hospital staff with the following:

  • Staff training and education (formal & informal)
  • Assist with policies and protocols for patient care pathways with a learning disability
  • Assist acute hospital staff achieve Best Practice Statement – February (2006) Promoting access to healthcare for people with a learning disability – a guide for front line staff

Referrals can be made by anyone.
