Beta-blockers

(Atenolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol)
  • Beta-blockers reduce the work the heart has to do by slowing down the heart rate and lowering the blood pressure. They also reduce the force with which the heart muscle contracts, so that it needs less energy

  • The benefits you will get from this drug are not immediate and in some cases may make you feel slightly worse for a few days. Don’t worry about this. The benefits may take a while to show, but are well worth it in the end

  • Fluid retention can occasionally be a problem and it is therefore very important that you monitor your weight on a daily basis

  • Side effects include cold hands and feet, a slow heart rate, dizziness/light headedness, tiredness and feeling washed out

  • Also breathlessness and ankle swelling (if this happens seek help from your nurse or GP)

  • You should only be on one type of beta blocker and do not suddenly stop your beat-blocker without speaking to your nurse or doctor as this could worsen your condition

  • Used to treat angina, high blood pressure, heart attacks. They also help some patients with heart failure feel better, stay out of hospital and live longer
