Counselling Services
EVA has various services for women who have experienced violence or abuse. The project has suggested to you that counselling could be of help and you are on the waiting list to see the counsellor who works for EVA. She will explain how she can help you in more detail but this leaflet tells you a little about what to expect.
What is counselling?
Counselling provides an opportunity for you to speak to someone (a counsellor) who is specially trained to listen to what you say and to help you work out for yourself what you would like to do about this. The counsellor will not judge you or force you to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss.
How can counselling help?
Counselling helps you think about and deal with things that are distressing. It also helps you to find out more about yourself – your strengths, your hopes and so on. It gives you the chance to have some time, which is just for you.
What will happen?
You will get an initial appointment to meet the counsellor. At the first session she will ask you to tell her what has been happening and what it is that you want help with. You do not need to tell her anything you don’t want to.
How long will it take?
This will depend on what you need. Usually, women have about 8-16 sessions and each session lasts about an hour.
Who will know?
We will not tell anyone outside EVA anything about you without your permission unless there is serious risk of someone being harmed. Your safety and wellbeing are very important to us.
