Diabetic Retinal Screening Service

NHS Lanarkshire's digital retinal screening service for people with diabetes launched in August 2006. In Scotland, all people with diabetes who are over 12 years of age, are invited to attend a diabetic retinopathy screening (DRS) using new digital technology

Diabetic retinopathy is the biggest single cause of blindness and visual impairment amongst people with diabetes in Scotland. Up to 10% of people with diabetes have eye problems that require treatment.

The progression of diabetic retinopathy can be prevented as long as it is detected early, through retinal screening, and treated appropriately.

In Scotland, all people with diabetes who are over 12 years of age, are invited to attend a diabetic retinopathy screening (DRS) using new digital technology.

Lanarkshire's diabetic retinopathy service (DRS) units are located at The Time Capsule in Coatbridge, Wishaw Health Centre and Brandon House in Hamilton. These sites cater for 90% of patients.

There is also a mobile DRS unit which is almost ready and will be used for people who are unable to attend any of the three community clinics. A programme is being drawn up for where the mobile unit will visit across Lanarkshire.

If you need to contact us about your retinal screening appointment or you have an nquiry or problem relating to retinal screening please phone 0845-3373341 for further information.
"This is a welcome development which will ensure that people with diabetes have rapid access to consistent high standard retinal screening services that could save their site"
Dr David Cromie, DRS Co-ordinator said,  “This is a welcome development which will ensure that people with diabetes have rapid access to consistent, high standard retinal screening services that could save their sight. People with diabetes will benefit from community-based services that are modern, purpose-designed with the latest technology and easier to access.”
