Much has been achieved over the last year:

  • ANew community diabetic clinic being recruited new community diabetic team is in the process of being recruited after funding was secured in the last financial year.  A service manager and 3 team leaders have been appointed to head up a new and exciting team which is to focus on patients in the community and provide eduction to them to help them manage their own diabetes better.
  • Work  is ongoing to identify Type 2 patients suitable for management in community setting.
  • We held a highly successful patient funday in the Timecapsule, Coatbridge to provide information from diabetes professionals and a wide variety of activities for children and young people to enjoy.
  • Structured education programmes for people with Type 1 (DAFNE) and Type 2 (X-PERT) diabetesDAFNE & X-PERT EDUCATION PROGRAMMES are being rolled out across Lanarkshire and have been very well received by the patients who have already signed themselves up to the programmes. 
  • Funding has been secured for training staff to deliver the structured education programmes.
  • Funding the business case for an insulin pump service means more insulin pumps will be prescribed in the future
  • Agreement and publication of a range of diabetes guidelines

Plans for the coming year:

As part of delivering diabetes services differently in Lanarkshire, we will be continuing to offer education programmes which will enable people to manage their own diabetes as best they can. This will initially focus on newly diagnosed people but will also be offered to people who have had their diabetes for a while and would like to take part in the programme.

We will be continuing the community projects which are currently underway but the focus in this year will be more towards the Acute sector and will include areas such as pregnancy, renal, transitional services, foot care and the condition of clinics.
