How many people in Lanarkshire have diabetes?
According to the Scottish Diabetes Survey (2010) there are more than 27,450 people in Lanarkshire currently diagnosed 27,450 people in Lanarkshire with diabeteswith diabetes.
This is slightly higher than then National Scottish figure of 4.6%. It is predicted that by 2018 there will be around 50,000 people in Lanarkshire with diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is seen in around 12.7% of all people in Lanarkshire with diabetes and the remaining 86.8% have Type 2 diabetes.
There are more men with diabetes than there are women with 11 men diagnosed to every 9 women. The majority of people who have diabetes are between the ages of 47 and 75 years old. Over half of people with diabetes in Lanarkshire are aged over 65 years of age.
It is estimated that as many as 15% of hospital in-patients at any one time may have diabetes therefore it is essential that all hospital staff are aware of the requirements of a patient with diabetes visiting hospital.
