Fast-track service for skin cancer patients
NHS Lanarkshire has a fast-track screening programme to diagnose and prioritise patients with skin cancer at Hairmyres, Wishaw and Monklands Hospitals. Digital images give specialists a way of ensuring the right patients are seen quickly
It is important that certain skin cancers are detected as early as possible as the patient’s chances of survival largely depend on how early the treatment is started.
Patients visiting their GP with this potentially lethal condition can have their skin lesion photographed within one working day, allowing dermatologists to view the digital images and fast-track anyone with suspected skin cancer.
The digital images give specialists a way of ensuring the right patients are seen quickly, without becoming overwhelmed by referrals.
It also means patients with other serious, but not potentially life-threatening, skin conditions such as psoriasis do not have to wait longer for an appointment than those with benign, non-harmful moles or lesions.
