Introduction
Community dental services operate from a number of dental clinics in health centres and other clinical locations across Lanarkshire. The community dental service aims to complement the dental care provided by general dental practitioners.
The service provides dental care for patients who have particular dental, medical or other special care requirements that make it difficult or inappropriate for some types of dental treatment to be provided in a general practice setting.
The types of patients treated by the community dental service include:
- Children with dental anxiety or with high levels of dental disease
- Patients with learning disabilities
- Medically compromised patients
- Patients with a range of physical and psychiatric conditions
General dental practitioners can refer patients to the community dental service for assessment, complete courses of treatment or for some aspects of their care. Patients are seen by appointment, Monday to Friday.
The community dental service also has a major role in carrying out the regular epidemiological surveys that provide information on the level of oral health in the population.
