I think my baby has Colic

A "colicky" baby cries in a totally different way from a baby who is crying because he is hungry. A '"colicky baby'' will tend to:

  • Tense up his whole body
  • Pull up his legs towards his tummy
  • Clench his fists
  • Scream, and get red in the face

All of this tends to make him swallow air, which unfortunately makes the situation worse. Before trying out some of the colic remedies available, you may like to:

  • Think about what you ate and drank the night before. Avoid that food or drink for the immediate future and see if there is a difference
  • Avoid too much coffee, tea and chocolate as these can make the baby irritable
  • If you smoke, try giving it up
  • If the colic persists then ask your Health Visitor or GP about remedies and their effectiveness
