Stress
Modern living brings increased pressures and stress. Experiencing continual stress can have a major effect on our health.
When we are stressed, the body produces high levels of the hormones adrenalin and noradrenalin. Too much of these hormones over long period of time can result in problems with our health such as concentration lapses, changes in sleeping patterns and eating habits, aggressive behaviour and exhaustion. Stress left untreated can lead to physical symptoms like headaches, migraines, skin problems, back and neck aches and digestive problems.
What can you do to reduce stress?
The first thing you can do is identify what is causing the stress and find a way to deal with it. Sharing your worries and anxieties with another person is a good start. Following on, there are a number of things you can do to relieve stress.
- Be organised - lack of organisation at work or home is a major cause of stress. Prioritise your workload and make lists.
- Time management - don’t overstretch yourself. Find a healthy balance at work, home and play. Make time for yourself.
- Diet - a well-balanced diet is vital to keep your body and mind in optimum condition. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and don’t drink alcohol to excess as this can make stress worse.
- Exercise – this can relieve stress as well as burn up excessive adrenalin, give you a refreshing sleep and promotes physical and mental alertness.
