A modernisation programme is currently underway to improve facilities and employing and training additional staff. This will allow the gradual introduction of digital hearing aids for patients able to benefit from the new technology.
As part of the modernisation programme, NHS Lanarkshire reopened the Audiology Department at Monklands Hospital in January 2006 following extensive refurbishment. It now has the latest technology to allow the fitting of new digital hearing aids. Previously, there was one hearing test room and one hearing aid work room at the Monklands department. The refurbishment has created two fully sound-proofed test rooms and a sound-treated work room.
This followed the opening of a state-of-the-art audiology facility in Hamilton in April 2005. The new Audiology Services premises at the Princes Gate in the town centre, replaced the old base at in Auchingramont Road.
The new facility is custom-fitted with the latest technology and includes four assessment rooms, two consulting rooms, two hearing aid fitting rooms, a seminar room and offices. It offers a range of services including: hearing testing; school screening service: paediatric ear, nose and throat; paediatric audiology; and hearing aid assessment, fitting and repair.
