Accident and Emergency
There are three Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments in Lanarkshire at Hairmyres, Monklands and Wishaw General Hospitals.
Accident and Emergency Departments see and treat patients who are either brought by ambulance, referred by their GP or make their own way to the department.
If you require non-urgent treatment for a minor injury or illness you should contact your GP in the first instance or NHS 24 if your illness or injury occurs out-of-hours.
If you present at A&E you will be assessed on arrival to determine how serious your illness or injury is. During periods of exceptionally high activity patients who do not require immediate emergency treatment may have to wait longer.
For patients who have a suspected major illness or injury, such as a heart attack, you should dial 999 for an ambulance . The ambulance crew will stabilise the patient and take them to A&E as appropriate.
