ELEVEN NHS Lanarkshire staff proved they were top of the class by becoming the first in Scotland to achieve a new post graduate certificate.

The Essential Development for Clinical Leadership Programme is accredited by Queen Margaret University and helps to improve the care provided to patients.

This has been offered in Lanarkshire since 2002 at degree level, and at Master’s level since 2005.

However, in November 2007 the programme at master’s level gained validation for a Post Graduate (PGCert) exit award in Clinical Leadership.

The aim of this programme is to develop those in clinical leadership positions to be able to function more effectively in their role, lead their teams and services and seek ways to add value to patient care.

NHS Lanarkshire is the only Scottish Health Board who offer this certificate.

The 11 who successfully completed the Essential Development for Clinical Leadership programme at master’s level, and gained a PGCert in Clinical Leadership, graduated on Wednesday 9 July at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh.

Moira Gray, practice development practitioner and supervisor of midwives at Wishaw General Hospital, said: “I’d like to say well done to all the graduates who worked extremely hard to gain this award.

“I’m very proud of the development and progress made since this programme was established in 2002.

“This award is a great achievement for both the participants who worked hard for this award and also for NHS Lanarkshire.

”The programme is run over 24 weeks and is divided into two double modules “Developing Self” and “Leading Others”.

The rationale for this is to assist those in Clinical leadership positions to become self aware, hence improving their personal effectiveness before developing the effectiveness of their teams.
