60th Anniversary of the NHS logo

THE NHS celebrates its 60th anniversary (also known as the Diamond Anniversary) this year and NHS Lanarkshire is planning a Sunday Fun Day in Strathclyde Park on Sunday 22nd June from 11am to 4pm to mark this important occasion.

The event is free and is being organised in partnership with both North & South Lanarkshire Leisure Trusts and North & South Lanarkshire Council, and will offer everyone the chance try out a range of sports with everything from golf and football to martial arts and dance.

Activities include:

  • Aerobics
  • Golf and golf simulator
  • Dance over the past 60 years
  • Music from the past 60 years
  • Martial arts
  • Athletics
  • Highland games
  • Nintendo Wii games
  • Hand washing tests (its harder than you think!)
  • Healthy heart checks
  • Health food stalls
  • Fitness tests
  • Football

There will also be lots of health tests to find out how healthy you and your family really are and an opportunity to donate Blood at the mobile Blood Transfusion Centre.

Employee director of NHS Lanarkshire Hugh Sweeney said: “This event is for all the family and there really will be something for everyone - from a gentle stroll round the park to an aerobic workout.

“The day is about learning about keeping fit and healthy and how much fun it can be to stay active.
“And, of course, why it is so important to take care of our health.

“There will also be lots of simple practical advice on keeping healthy as well as the chance to get free health checks such as cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

“We want everyone to get involved and hope that people come along and make this the best birthday party ever.”

Schools throughout Lanarkshire are being asked to submit poster designs for the event with prizes for the successful entries. Children are also being asked to submit any stories, poems or interviews about the NHS. Entries to both the writing and poster competition will be on display at the Fun Day and will also be used on NHS Lanarkshire’s publicity for the event and on our website.
