Executive Board members

Tim Davison

Tim Davison, Chief Executive, joined the NHS as a National Management Trainee in 1983. Since then he has worked in most sectors of the NHS in Forth Valley, Lothian, Greater Glasgow and Lanarkshire NHS Board areas.

Tim was the Chief Executive of three NHS Trusts in Glasgow between 1994 and 2005, before being appointed to his current post of Chief Executive, NHS Lanarkshire just over three years ago.

Alison Graham

Alison Graham, Medical Director, graduated from Dundee Medical School in 1987. She subsequently worked mainly in obstetrics and gynaecology as well as general practice.

Following a short spell as a Principal in General Practice she qualified as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine. From there she moved into medical management and after 3 years as an executive director in Bath moved back to Scotland.

Alison spent 8 very happy years as the Medical Director in NHS Highland and in March 2007 took up a new professional and personal challenge as the Medical Director for NHS Lanarkshire.

Alan Lawrie

Alan is the Director of the South Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership and has been in post for just over two years. Alan’s role sees him taking operational responsibility for community health services within the four localities in South Lanarkshire as well as taking a board wide role in regard to the development of primary care services in particular around the care for people with long term conditions and the health improvement agenda.

In addition to the above Alan has corporate responsibility for the drug & prescribing budgets across NHS Lanarkshire as well as the eHealth Department.

Alan qualified as an accountant in 1989 working for the NHS in Cardiff and has spent his career to date in the NHS.

Since 1994 Alan has worked predominantly in primary care and mental health holding positions as Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive within NHS Trusts in Cheshire and Merseyside before moving to North Wales as a Chief Executive in 2002.

Lynne Khindria

Lynne Khindria, Director of Strategic Human Resources and Workforce Development, has responsibility for the Human Resource service, Pay Modernisation, Staff Governance, Occupational Health and Safety and Workforce Development.

She took over the post as Director on 11th August 2008. Prior to this Lynne held the post as Deputy Human Resource Director in NHS Lanarkshire and has previously held Senior Human Resource posts with NHS Lothian, the Scottish Executive and Scottish Blood Transfusion Service.

Rosemary Lyness

Rosemary Lyness, was appointed to the post of Executive Director of Acute Services in July 2007.

Rosemary has had extensive experience within acute services and has held a number of senior nursing and managerial posts across Glasgow and Lanarkshire over the last 15 years.

Ian Ross

Ian Ross, Director for Strategic Implementation, Planning and Performance has extensive NHS experience in both England and Scotland. 

Ian has worked within NHS Lanarkshire since 1987 mainly in the Acute Services. He was responsible for leading the PFI procurement process for Wishaw General Hospital and led the project to open new hospitals at Wishaw and Hairmyres Hospital in 2001. 

Ian held the post of Director of Acute Services within NHS Lanarkshire from 2004 until he moved to his present post. His present post carries responsibility for the planning and management of change and development of clinical services across NHS Lanarkshire. The post also has lead responsibility for the implementation of the Board’s Capital Programme, is the designated Director for PFPI, Communications and Property & Support Services across NHS Lanarkshire.

Colin Sloey

Colin Sloey, Director North Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership, is responsible for delivering the full range of clinical and non-clinical services within the North Lanarkshire CHP.

Colin also has responsibility for strategic leadership of Maternal and Child Health Services, Mental Health Services and Learning Disabilities services on a Lanarkshire-wide basis.

Prior to the introduction of Community Health Partnerships in April 2005, Colin was the Chief Executive of NHS Lanarkshire’s Primary Care Operating Division.

He began his NHS career in 1978, training as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and Registered General Nurse. He held a range of clinical posts in both hospital and community settings before moving into service management. He worked for Lanarkshire Primary Care NHS Trust as Director of Patient Services before its dissolution in 2004.

Colin is a qualified member of the Institute of Healthcare Managers and has completed a Masters in Business Administration. Married with two teenage children, he is keen on virtually all sports especially football, American Football and golf.

Paul Wilson

Paul Wilson, Nurse Director, undertook psychiatric and general nurse training, gained Diplomas in Nursing, Management Studies and an MBA from Henley Management College. His clinical speciality was intensive care. His senior appointments include:

  • 1982 - Chief Nurse of Maidstone Health Authority and later its Director of Policy and Planning
  • 1987 - General Manager of all Mental Health Services in Greater Glasgow
  • 1991 - Director of all of NHS Lothian’s operational services including the Royal Infirmary
  • 1994 - Director of NHS Trusts at the Scottish Office
  • 1999 - Executive Director for AHPs, Nursing & Midwifery of NHS Lanarkshire

Non Executive Board members

 

John Anning

John Anning was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in April 2005. His term of appointment runs until 31 March 2009.

John retired from full time employment as a Senior Civil Servant with the Department for International Development in August 2006.

His career in the public service has included a wide range of jobs including project and programme management and management review for various aspects of the UK’s development assistance programme and financial and human resource management for the department as a whole.

John worked in DFID’s headquarters in Abercrombie House, East Kilbride from 1991 until his retirement last year, where latterly he held the position of Head of Corporate Human Resources. He is a HR professional and Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.

John Chairs the North Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership Operating Management Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee and the Remuneration Committee. John lives in Lanark.

David Clark

David Clark was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in April 2005. His term of appointment runs until 31 March 2009.

After graduation and qualifying as a secondary teacher, David taught in Scotland, Australia and New Zealand before taking up a research and teaching fellowship at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and working for the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company.

Returning to the UK, he spent 15 years in the field of housing and care for older people in Scotland, specialising in the development of services for those affected by dementia, and was appointed Chief Executive of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland in 1994.

David is a member of the Minister’s National Advisory Committee on Stroke and serves on several Managed Clinical Networks for Stroke, Coronary Heart Disease and Respiratory Illness. He has served on a wide range of local and national planning groups and review bodies, including the NHS QIS Project Board for Stroke and the SIGN Guidelines Development Group for CHD.

David is a member of the Health and Clinical Governance Committee, the Acute Operating Management Committee and the North Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership Operating Management Committee. He lives in East Kilbride.

Ken Corsar

Ken Corsar, Chairman, NHS Lanarkshire, is a graduate of St Andrews University (M.A.) and Glasgow University (M.Ed).

He is a qualified secondary school teacher and taught in Uddingston Grammar School before entering educational management in Strathclyde Regional Council. Latterly he was Director of Education in Glasgow City Council.

Ken has also worked as a Scottish Director for the National Deaf Children’s Society and has a special interest in new-born hearing screening and early intervention.

He has been a non-executive member of the NHS Lanarkshire Board since April 2003, and was appointed as Chair of NHS Lanarkshire Board in November 2005. His term of appointment runs until 31 October 2009.

Terry Currie

Terry Currie was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in April 2004. His term of appointment runs until 31 March 2012.

Terry’s early employment history includes 15 years with British Steel.

Since 1983 his career has been in the Business Development sphere, involving appointments as Director with: Monklands Enterprise; Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire and Scottish Enterprise National. He is currently Director, Growing Business with Scottish Enterprise National.

Terry holds Board Member positions with Scottish Business in the Community and New Lanarkshire Limited. He is Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Lanark. Terry is Chairman of the Acute Division Operating Management Committee, and is a member of the Audit Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

Terry lives in Motherwell.

Neena Mahal

Neena Mahal was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in April 2004. Her term of appointment runs until 31 March 2012.

Neena is a freelance training consultant specialising in the fields of equality, personal and organisational development.

As a qualified careers adviser she has a background in education and community development work and has served on a number of committees promoting social inclusion and initiatives for young people.

Neena is a former member of the Broadcasting Council for Scotland and founder member and former Director of Scotland’s first information and resource centre for Black and Minority Ethnic women.

Neena is a Trustee of the BBC Children in Need Appeal and a Trustee of National Museums Scotland.

Neena is currently Chair of the South Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership and was also Chair of the Board’s Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee until 2007.

She is also a member of the Health and Clinical Governance Committee, the Staff Governance Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

Neena lives in Cumbernauld.

Eddie McAvoy

Eddie McAvoy was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in September 2001. His term of appointment runs until 10 June 2011.

Following a career working for Hoover, Cambuslang for 27 years, he was elected to South Lanarkshire Council in 1995 and took up the position of Depute Group Whip, then Depute Group Leader.

Eddie was re-elected to the Council in 1999 and elected as Leader of the Council. He was re-elected to the Council in 2003 and re-elected as Leader. He was re-elected to the Council in 2007.

Eddie is a member of the Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee.

He lives in Rutherglen.

Jim McCabe

Jim McCabe was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2001. His term of appointment runs until 10 June 2011.

Jim commenced his working life as a Miner, followed by spells as a Fitter Erector and work offshore.

He worked with Strathclyde Regional Council’s Social Work Department from 1985 – 1987.

In 1992 he was elected as a District Councillor with Motherwell District Council where he served as Vice Convener of Environmental Services. Following Local Authority reorganisation in 1996, he became Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council and was appointed Leader in 1998. He has recently been re-appointed as Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, following the Local Authority Elections in May 2007.

Jim is a member of the Committee of Regions in Europe and Leader of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) Labour Group.

Jim is a member of the Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee.

He lives in Uddingston.

Deirdre McCormick

Deirdre McCormick was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non Executive Director in October 2005. Her term of appointment runs until 30 September 2009.

Deirdre has a background in general nursing, midwifery and health visiting. She has extensive experience in both the acute and primary care settings and has worked in several countries: Ireland, England, Scotland and Australia.

Over the past ten years Deirdre has held several positions within Lanarkshire NHS: Senior Nurse Research and Practice Development within the Primary Care NHS Trust’s Nursing Directorate; Clinical Development Manager for Children’s Services, Lanarkshire Primary Care Trust and is currently employed as the Service Development Manager for Children’s Services within the North Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership, Wishaw Locality.

Deirdre is currently a PhD student at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Her appointment to the Lanarkshire NHS Board stems from her position as Chair of the Area Clinical Forum and Chair of the Area Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Committee.

Deirdre is a member of the Health and Clinical Governance Committee.

She lives in Hamilton.

Margaret Nelson

Margaret Nelson was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2003. Her term of appointment runs until 30 June 2011.

Margaret has had a 30 year professional career, initially in the Civil Service and then with the Post Office Corporation and British Telecom, gaining substantial experience in both the public and the private sector.

Her career covered management positions in Finance, Estates/Facilities Management and Safety Management.

She achieved a professional qualification in Human Resources/Personnel, and continued a career in this field covering over 20 years. Latterly, this progressed into Project/Process and Change Management work, involving the assessment of the personnel implications of major initiatives affecting mainly the engineering workforce.

Margaret is currently also a member of the Employment Tribunal Service, sitting on cases spanning all areas of employment law.

Margaret Chairs the Health and Clinical Governance Committee and is a member of the Acute Operating Management Committee and the South Lanarkshire Community Health Partnership Operating Management Committee.

Margaret lives in Carluke.

Sandra Smith

Sandra Smith was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in August 2006. Her term of appointment runs until 31 July 2010.

Sandra’s background is in community development and social housing. Formerly depute director of a housing association, she has extensive experience of regeneration, community controlled housing services, and organisational management.

Sandra was previously practice teacher in a community development training unit and a detached youth worker.

She now provides consultancy services in the voluntary sector and is a member of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland.

Sandra is a member of the Audit Committee, the Staff Governance Committee and the Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee.

She lives in Dalserf.

Bill Sutherland

Bill Sutherland was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a Non-Executive Director in April 2004. His term of appointment runs until 31 March 2011.

Bill is Director of Human Resources and Deputy Secretary at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

Strathclyde is a Business and Technology focussed University, which prides itself in being “the place of useful learning” and an “Investor in People”.

Bill is a law graduate of Glasgow University and a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Bill has been an HRM practitioner for over 30 years, acquiring his work experience through spells in both the Business and the Higher Education sectors.

He is a former Chair of the British and Irish Universities Personnel Association.

He is Co-Director of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities’ Leaders Programme.

Bill is Chairman of the Audit Committee and is a member of the Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee and Chairs the Pharmacy Practices Committee.

Bill lives near Lanark.

Hugh Sweeney

Hugh Sweeney was appointed to the Lanarkshire NHS Board as Employee Director in 2001. His term of appointment runs until 30 September 2009.

Hugh’s professional career has been in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences, and he has 33 years service in this area, most of which has been spent at Monklands Hospital, latterly as a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist in Haematology.

Hugh was nominated by the Trade Unions to serve as Employee Director on the Lanarkshire NHS Board.

This role is central to the partnership arrangements that operate between management and staff within the NHS in Lanarkshire.

Hugh chairs the Board's Staff Governance Committee and the Equality, Diversity and Spirituality Committee, and is a member of the Audit Committee. He is also a Board Member of North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust.

Hugh lives in Airdrie.
